So, in order to cut down on the number of dust mites in your home you should do the following:

  • Wash bedding materials, curtains and rugs often in hot water.
  • Keep books and stuffed animals to a minimum and dust often.
  • Wash any stuffed animals regularly in hot water.
  • Dust common dust mite habitats with tannic acid.
  • Use furniture, pillow and mattress covers.
  • Use fabric minimally in the home.
  • Use filters on heat ducts and change them on a regular basis.
  • Do not use humidifiers.
  • Keep areas prone to humidity and moisture dry.
  • Limit lots of air movement in problem areas like bedrooms.
It takes regular, routine maintenance to keep dust mite numbers down. You have to be meticulous about cleaning and make sure you do not forget to dust every area, like under beds or behind furniture. Only through this type of cleaning will you be able to get and keep the number of dust mites in your home down.
