You have to understand what it is that the pests are wanting when they come into your home, so you can eliminate it. If you take away the things they enjoy about being inside they will likely seek another place to call home.

Part of getting rid of pests involves getting to know a little about the type pest you have in your home. Some pests, like grain beetles, hang out in the pantry around boxed and bagged foods, while others like, termites live in wood. Knowing about the habits of the pest will go a long way to helping you figure out how to get rid of them.

To prevent pests you need to do three things. You have to get rid of food sources, water sources and living areas. One of the first steps is removing and cleaning up any food waste, standing water or clutter. You should also check the outside of your home to make sure you do not have anything that may be drawing pests to your home. Wood should be stacked of the ground and away from the house; garbage bins should be tightly closed; tree branches should not be touching the house.

You should also check for any cracks or openings o both the inside and outside walls of the house. The kitchen seems to be the biggest place for pests, so take extra steps in there. Clean up dirty dishes quickly; take garbage out promptly, do not keep recyclables in the house; wipe up spills and dry them; do not leave open food containers sitting around.
If you following these preventative measures you should find that you can keep household pests to a minimum.

Privacy Policy

Privacy Policy for Get Rid Of Pests

The privacy of our visitors to Get Rid Of Pests is important to us.

At Get Rid Of Pests, we recognize that privacy of your personal information is important. Termites are among those that can damage your home. They eat away at wood and can ruin your homes framing structure. One of the biggest ways to fight termites is to stop them before they come, but once they are in your home there are some steps you can take to get rid of them and save your home.
Identifying termites presence should start with a little looking around. You may notice rotted wood or damaged wood. You may also see the termites during warmer months when they come out of the wood. You may not actually be able to see damage, so tapping or drilling with a probe of some sort on the suspected infested area can help you to find hollow spots where termites have been.

Once you have confirmed you have termites you need to get to work at getting rid of them. It is best to have a professional take care of getting rid of them. However, there are some things you can do to help. Fixing outside faucets that are worn out or leaky will help to keep moisture spots away, which provide ample ground for termites to live. Additionally, clean and repair gutters to help keep moisture away from your house. Stack firewood or other wood products off the ground. Fill in cracks or other openings on the outside of your home.
You should do everything you can to aid the professional exterminator. Your combined efforts are the best way to get termites out of your home for good. Once they are gone you will need to repair any damage they may have done, but you can expect to be free from them for at least five years after the professional extermination.

Get Rid of Spiders

Spiders are one of the hardest pests to get rid of. Some people do not even see the need to rid their home of spiders because they are not bothered by them and appreciate the job they do of eating other insects. Other people, however, do not enjoy these creepy, crawling creatures. Some spiders, in fact, are very dangerous and if they are in your home then you should seriously consider getting them out as soon as possible.
Most spiders are harmless and can actually help you by ridding your home of other insects. There are a few spiders, though, that can be dangerous. These dangerous spiders can cause severe health issues if you are bitten by them. The black widow, brown recluse and hobo spiders are all very dangerous spiders. If you discover that you have a problem with one of these types of spiders then you need to get rid of them as soon as possible.

Sometimes it can be quite difficult to identify spiders and you may not even know if you have a dangerous spider or if the spiders in your home are harmless. That is why learning how to recognize them is important. Black widows have a very round body and reach a size of about 1 ½ inches. They are black in color with red markings that look like an hourglass. Brown recluse spiders are about ½ inch in size and are brown in color. They have a darker brown fiddle shaped marking. The hobo spider is about 1 ½ inches in size and is brown in color. They have striped markings in brown.

Spiders hide and are usually found in corners or other out of the way places where they can build their web. They usually only come out at night. Spiders can be difficult to get rid of. You should start with making sure all other bugs are out of your home. They feed on bugs and this will rob them of their food source. Also you should knock down any webs you see. You may want to vacuum the webs away so if there is an egg sack you remove that. You should thrown away the vacuum bag after use. You can use sprays or other commercial pesticides as well.
Spiders can live quite a while without food and they can hide I the smallest of places. They also do not respond well to many pesticides. That is why they can be hard to get rid of and if you do not have any of the three dangerous spiders you may be better off leaving them alone. However, if you do end up with a dangerous spider you should remove them form your home as quickly as possible using the methods above.

How to get rid of snakes

The majority of people would be quite upset to find a snake in their home. In some parts of the country, though, this is a reality. That is why it is very important, if you live in an area where snake infestation in homes is common, to learn how to protect your home against them and how to get rid of them once they some inside. The best way to do this is to learn about some common misconceptions that do not work to deter snakes.
Many people use sulfur as a snake repellent. It has been shown, though, that sulfur does not work. If you use a sulfur barrier to deter snakes it could actual cause more harm than good. As they crawl across the barrier it gets into the body and causes them to act irritated, which poses a big threat for bites and aggressive behavior. Lime is another product some people use as a barrier and this also does not work. Lime is very harmful to humans, so you should never use it to try to repel snakes.

Keeping your yard free of clutter and cutting down on places where snakes can hide is a good start to keeping them out of the house. Cover and seal all holes in your foundation or outer walls. Cats are also a good, natural, way to repel snakes. There are some commercial products, but they have not proven to be very effective. The best way to get rid of snakes is to call in a professional who can safely remove them. You will usually not end up with an infestation so removal is a good solution.
To keep safe around snakes you should never try to handle them or get too close to them. This is especially true if you do not know what type of snake it is, as it could be poisonous. Handle them with great care or call a professional to remove them.

How to get rid of silverfish

Silverfish can be overwhelming in a home. They seem to eat almost anything and they can easily evade attempts to get rid of them. The best way to handle silverfish is to get to know everything you can about them. By earning their habits and life cycle you can better learn how to get the out of your home for good.
Silverfish like to eat things like flour, glue and starch. They cause damage to items when they eat things because they usually eat glue off paper items, like wallpaper and starch off of clothes. They live in areas that are cool and damp like laundry areas. They are most active at night and will only be seen during the day if they happen to get stuck in a sink or bathtub.

This is one bug that is not really attract by clutter or messes. If you have a lot of papers or books you should clean them out and put them away where the silverfish can not get to them. If you reduce the humidity and dampness in the area where they live you may be able to get them to move to an area where you can better take care of them. When using products to get rid of them, you need to make sure you get it into the cracks and areas around baseboards and pipes where they live. You also need to get it into the walls and you may need to drill a hole into the wall to be able to do that. You should also vacuum the area and keep vacuuming the area daily until they are gone.
Many people think silverfish are not harmful, but they can cause quite a bit of damage if left in your home. They will eventually be found in food items in the pantry and may start to damage books and wallpaper. It is best to just get rid of them as soon as you realize you have an infestation.

How to get rid of rats

Rats are dirty creatures that often find their way into homes. Rats in the home can bring disease and even bugs. They chew wires which can be very risky. Rats are not something you want in your home. You have to identify how they get in and stop them. If they are already in your home then you have to get them out. Bottom line - rats are a danger to your health and you can not live with them.
Rats can be found inside walls, crawl spaces, cupboards and almost any other hiding spot in your home. They like food of any kind, including pet food. They are very attracted to waste - food, human or animal. Outside they hide in piles of wood, leaves, garbage bins and around any rubble. If there are rats outside of your home then it is likely they will migrate indoors.

The first step in getting rid of rats is to clean up outside. You should stack fire wood off the ground. Keep the outer areas of your home clean from debris and trash. Keep trash bins tightly closed. Do not leave pet foods outside, including bird food that is not in a high container. Once you have cleaned up outside you need to clean up inside.

If you have a basement where you keep food, you need to keep it in containers rats can not get into. Make sure any holes or other openings to your home are sealed off. Cut back branches of trees that may touch your roof. Keep you sink and bathtub drains cleaned.
If you encounter a rat in your home, then set out live traps to catch them or call in a professional. Remember that rats carry many diseases and can be very harmful if they attack you or bite you.

How to get rid of moths

When storing away clothes for the off-season, you may be very careful to make sure they are in good shape and they are nicely folded so when taking them out next season they are ready for use. When you go to take them out of storage there is nothing more horrifying than finding them littered with moth holes, ruined and turned into useless rags. Moths can wreak havoc on your stored clothing, but you can fight against them and save your clothes.
Moths do not actually cause the damage to fabrics and clothes. It is there larvae that eats through everything. They prefer dark places which is why they often attack items that are stored away. They will eat animal goods like leather and even bristles on natural brushes, feathers, fur and other fabric items. They also eat bugs on occasion. Moths lay up to 150 eggs so one adult moth could leave a lot of larvae to do some serious damage.

You want to get rid of both the moths and the larvae. Traps are a good way to stop moths. They are placed in the effected area. Moth balls used to be a popular method of deterrence, but they have been found to have harmful chemicals in them that are very hazardous to your health. If you do choose to use them then you should make sure to follow the instructions on the package carefully. You should not store anything in the effected area until the moths are gone. You should also make sure it is clean of any other bugs, so there is no food source to attract them.

Taking care of moths will help save your stored goods. All you need to do is set out some traps and you should see your moth problem go away.

How to get rid of mosquitos

Mosquitoes are usually an outdoor pest, but in some cases they decide to come inside and keep bugging us long after warm weather has gone. Nobody enjoys the stinging bite of a mosquito. Harboring them inside during the colder months only means there will still be a nice population outside when summer returns. The best thing to do is to get rid of them.

Mosquitoes can be a real annoyance once they come inside. They usually seek shelter inside because there is little moving air, which makes it hard for them to fly. They enter through cracks in doors and windows. There are many things you can do to help keep mosquitoes out of your home and they will usually solve the problem for you.

You should first seal any entrance areas. Be aware that they are active in early morning and early evening, so you may want to avoid leaving doors open during this time as this is just inviting them inside. You may also want to situate a fan nearby entrance points to deter them form coming in. You should eliminate any standing water outside your home, especially near doors and windows as mosquitoes bred near standing water.

You can spray outside to cut down on the mosquitoes, which helps to keep them outside, too. They dislike the smell of rosemary and sage so you may want to have pots of these plants near doors or planted in your flower beds. Marigolds are another great plant option that will repel mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are not a pleasant pest, but thankfully they will not damage your home or breed inside. They are mostly a pest that you just don't want to bother you. By keeping mosquitoes under control outside you will greatly reduce the chance that they will come inside.

How to get rid of ladybugs

Ladybugs are one pest that are really not harmful. Still they are an annoyance and most people find they end up with a terrible ladybug infestation. Ladybugs attract other ladybugs so if you see one there are sure to be others. They crawl and fly around and just are not something you enjoy in your home. They can be difficult to get rid of, though, so you should learn the effective steps to getting ladybugs to leave.
Ladybugs quickly multiple once they invade a home. That is due to the fact that they release a pheromone that attracts other ladybugs. Once they release the pheromone it does not go away, so even once they are gone, it remains to let other ladybugs know it is a good winter hibernation spot. They usually seek a nice place to stay out the winter. They let off a foul smell and can be toxic to some animals, but they are relatively harmless to humans.

However, if you have had a ladybug infestation you understand that they are not pleasant to have around the house and after a while they may start to bite. They can become overwhelming in numbers and you start to find them everywhere, even in your food, where they may have dropped while traveling about your home.
Getting rid of them starts with sealing off cracks or other areas they may enter through. The drier your home, the better off because ladybugs dehydrate quickly without a good water source. You can vacuum them up, which is a very effective method to get them out of your home. You can then release them back outside. There are also commercial products that you can use to get ladybugs back outside. There are special lights which attract them and trap them. Most products to get rid of ladybugs are not toxic to them. This is because they do more good than harm and it is better to catch them and release them back outside than to exterminate them.

How to get rid of flies

Nothing is worse than a house full of flies. Many things attract a fly into the house and once one gets in it seems many more follow. What may start out as simply a few flies can quickly turn into an infestation. The first step to fighting flies is knowing what type of fly they are and then you can start to rid yourself and your house of flies.
There are four types of flies that you may find around your home. Drain flies are found in drains or sewers. Fruit flies like garbage or other rotting food products. Phorid flies like drains, garbage and any rotting organic matter. Sphaerocerid flies are found around rotting food sources and drains.

The first step to getting rid of flies is to clean up. Since flies like dirty areas, a good cleaning of garbage areas and drains is a good start. Keeping food put away in sealed containers and cleaning up messes as soon as they occur is something that has to be done to help avoid flies.

You also need to make sure they can not get in through holes in your window screens. These can be easily patched or if they are badly damaged get them replaced. Also watch to see if they are coming in through cracks in the door. If your door does not close all the way or has visible openings when closed you should get it fixed as flies will use that as an entrance.
To help get rid of the flies in your home hang glue strips. These sticky strip hang from the ceiling and catch the flies as they are flying around. You will need to change them often to keep them ready to catch more flies. There are also sprays you can buy to use for flies.

How to get rid of fleas

Anyone who has had a pet has most likely had a battle with fleas. They can real hard to get rid of if a person does not take all the necessary steps. They can become a huge nuisance if they get out of control, so stopping them right away is part of the solution. If your home is infested with fleas get them leave by following the right steps.
Fleas usually live on animals, like cats and dogs, but when an animal is not around they will bite humans. They can cause your pet to become ill, so besides being troublesome, they are dangerous. It can be quite difficult to get rid of fleas because they not only live on the animal, but they also live in carpets, on furniture, in bedding and outside in the grass.

The first thing to do is treat the animal. You should bath the animal, comb their fur to get rid of eggs and dead fleas and then give him a flea treatment. There are many options from which to choose form gels to collars. Next you need to vacuum your home thoroughly. Make sure to throw out the vacuum bag when you are finished. You may need to treat your home. One of the best and most through methods is using a bomb. You set it off, leave for a little while, come back and air out the house. You should also make sure you dispose of yard waste and keep grass cut short so fleas will not stay.
You may need to repeat your extermination procedure because fleas reproduce quickly and the young fleas are usually able to withstand treatments. Most likely the bomb will take care of the house, but you should watch your pet for signs of that he may have fleas again.

How to get rid of dust mites

Dust mites can cause allergy and asthma patients to have a hard time. Everyone lives with dust mites. They are microscopic so it is very hard to know just how bad you may have them. The only defense against them is to control them. The best way to control them is to take steps to keep your home as clean and free f dust as possible.
You can not completely get rid of dust mites. They are too small and become embedded in furniture and beds. The only thing you can do is limit their numbers. Dust mites like humid areas. They like to live on fabrics and in fluffy items. They become most irritating when they become air borne and are most harmful to allergy and asthma sufferers. So, in order to cut down on the number of dust mites in your home you should do the following:

Vacuum all beds and furniture.

Wash bedding materials, curtains and rugs often in hot water.

Keep books and stuffed animals to a minimum and dust often.

Wash any stuffed animals regularly in hot water.

Dust common dust mite habitats with tannic acid.

Use furniture, pillow and mattress covers.

Use fabric minimally in the home.

Use filters on heat ducts and change them on a regular basis.

Do not use humidifiers.

Keep areas prone to humidity and moisture dry.

Limit lots of air movement in problem areas like bedrooms.

It takes regular, routine maintenance to keep dust mite numbers down. You have to be meticulous about cleaning and make sure you do not forget to dust every area, like under beds or behind furniture. Only through this type of cleaning will you be able to get and keep the number of dust mites in your home down.

How to get rid of cockroaches

Cockroaches are notorious for being hard to get rid of and for being quick to multiply. Many people have an extreme phobia of cockroaches. These are dirty bugs that can often be hard to stop. There are many things that a person can do, though, to get rid of cockroaches in there home.
Cockroaches are notorious for being hard to get rid of. The only way to really get them out of your home is to follow a comprehensive plan. You need to first get rid of their life supply, their food, hiding places and water sources.

Taking away their food source involves:

cleaning up food spills right away

keeping food products in sealed containers or in the refrigerator

keeping cabinet clean

taking recyclables outside

keeping garbage outside

washing and cleaning the stove, countertops, tables and sinks daily

Taking away their hiding places involves:

keeping drawers clean and uncluttered

not using shelf paper or other lining in cabinets

storing unused clothing in tightly sealed containers

storing unused furniture outside

repairing cracks or other openings around pipes

repairing pealing wallpaper

To take away their water sources:

fix leaks in pipes

keep drains clean

keep the area around the sink dry

Once you have done this you can move on to methods to ensure they get out and stay out. You can use the traditional method of sprinkling boric acid around areas you have seen them. You can also try some homemade methods like mixing up a garden chemical, like Miracle Grow in a spray bottle and spraying that in areas where you have seen them.
Getting rid of cockroaches requires a strong stance. You have to be dedicated and take care of the whole problem. They can be hard to get rid of, but it is possible with persistence.

How to get rid of crickets

Crickets may seem like an outside bug, but they can get into homes and become quite a nuisance. Crickets that are inside can eat fabrics, papers and food. Plus, their chirping can be enough to drive you crazy when you are trying to get some sleep. If you find this happy, little bug has found his way into your home, you should get rid of him before he damages your home and your sanity.
Crickets like o eat a wide range of things. They feed on food, paper and fabrics. There are a few different types of crickets that may invade your home. There are house crickets, field crickets, camel crickets and ground crickets. They tend to come inside when the weather gets colder. They may lay their eggs in cracks around baseboards or other small crevices. They are attracted by light and are most active at night. This is why they can be an annoyance inside. Their happy chirping can lead to many sleepless nights for you.

Crickets are attracted to the moisture in homes. By keeping your home free of moisture you should be able to deter the majority of crickets. It helps to keep weeds and other vegetation away from your home, as crickets tend to live in these areas. You should make sure that all your doors and windows close tightly, as this is how crickets enter the home. Use insect repelling lights that are made to repel insects around your home entrances.
You can use traps to catch crickets. There are also chemical products you can use. They can be quite difficult to find. Most people find they can hear them clearly, but can not seem to figure out where they are hiding. An attempt to catch them and release them back outside may be more difficult than expected. Eventually, the crickets will migrate back outside, so if you do not have a large infestation or the cricket does not bother you, then you may choose to just wait until they leave instead of using extermination measures.

How to get rid of centipedes

Centipede's are ugly bugs that often find their way into homes. Generally, they are not harmful to humans, but most people would prefer not to share their home with them. Centipede's are rather easy to control, though, if you know how to keep them away.
Centipede's can get to six inches in length. They are more harmless than they look and are, actually, a good bug catcher. They eat spiders, cockroaches and other pests that are often found in homes. They prefer dark and damp areas and are often found in bathrooms. They get in through cracks and other small openings. Centipedes can bite, though. There bite feels like a sting, but it does not usually cause any major problems. They rarely bite humans, but will if they feel threatened or if their food source is gone.

To help control centipedes in your home you should remove their outside habitats like piles of leaves or wood. You can also use diatomaceous earth around your house which is deadly to insects, but a safe for humans and animals. You should also use dehumidifiers in damp areas of your home. Also rid your home of other pests. Without food the centipedes will go elsewhere. Be aware, though, that is a difficult task on its own. You should try the other suggestions before attempting this.

If you have tried all the suggested things and you still have a problem then you may need to contact a professional. Any extreme infestation requires the knowledge and skills of a professional as they understand better exactly how to tackle a pest problem. You may wish to have them treat your home for other pests at the same time to help prevent further infestation of centipedes.
Remember that centipedes rarely harm humans and are more of an annoyance than anything.

How to get rid of bed bugs

If you notice you have unwelcome visitors in your bed, then it is time to do something about it. Bed bugs are a pesky bug that feeds off blood. They are difficult to get rid of, so if you have them you must take the proper steps to get them out of your bed and out of your home forever.
Bed bugs usually come into your home by traveling on luggage, bedding, furniture or other items that may have been in an infested place. Once they make themselves at home they are very hard to get rid of. It takes time and patience to get these bugs out of your home. They are nocturnal and you will most likely never see one during the day. They can also live for a long time, over a year, without food. Contributing to their hard to rid nature, bed bugs lay around 300 eggs and it only takes ten days for them to hatch. They eat blood that they get from biting you. The one indication you may have that you have bed bugs are the bites you will get. You may also notice dead bugs, bloody spots or rusty colored stains caused by excrement.

To get rid of bed bugs you have to follow a step-by-step plan. Any item that can be laundered needs to be bagged and put in the dryer. Other items should be wrapped in plastic and placed in a hot area for a few days or in the freezer for two weeks. Larger items should be vacuumed and the vacuum bag should be thrown out immediately. Steam cleaning the room is also a good idea. There are many regulations on using pesticides as a treatment, so it is best you call a professional to treat the area. If they have infested a mattress then you should throw it out because they can not be treated with any pesticides.
The treatment process to get rid of bed bugs needs to be repeated until the bugs are completely gone. You should vacuum and steam clean on a regular basis, as well as laundering linens and other bedding items.

How to get rid of bats

Most people associate bats with sucking blood. While they do suck blood, the more dangerous aspect to humans is their feces and bites. If you have a bat infestation you need to learn a little more about the type of bat you have and then learn how to get rid of it. Once you get the bats out of your home, you need to then work to prevent them from getting back in.
Most bats that get onto homes are just looking for a place to stay during the day. They do not like light and prefer the dark, coolness of an attic. They usually leave at night to hunt for food.

The only real way to keep bats out of your home is to make sure they can not get in. You should check around your roof area for holes or spaces where they could get in and seal them off. Also check your chimney to make sure it has no holes or openings and that your chimney trap is working properly. You can seal the holes with the material of your choice. Bats can not chew through materials to get in. Before sealing you should make sure all the bats that are inside have left. The best time is at night when they will leave to hunt.

Bats do not like fiberglass insulation, so if you do not have any installed in your attic then you may consider doing so if bats are a huge problem. You can also leave on the lights or use a fan in the area as this will deter bats also. Some bird repellents will also work to keep bats away when it is applied to the area around entrances.
While bats can be harmful, they generally only create a nuisance. They are quite helpful because they eat other pests that you may not want in your home. If you have bat problems, you may want to call a professional who can help you best deal with your situation.

How to get rid of ants

Ants come in all shapes and sizes, but it does not matter what type of ant they are if they are in your home.
